On the Fox TV show 24 there is an episode that shows a satellite view of the target that the terrorists are planning on attacking next. They don't say what the target is, but it is clearly a satellite view. So I paused it and checked what the frame was. A green image clearly taken from above is shown, to the right are two circular buildings which are the big oil storage tanks. In the center of the image is a small black circle with a long shadow pointing north.
A smokestack and oil tanks was my guess.
Since the show takes place in Los Angeles, and since they film here, it made sense to me that their target would also be a real location in the southern california area.
So I fired up Google Earth and attempted to find the target before the terrorists hit it. Since 24 is shown in real time I thought it would be a neat interactive experiment in entertainment :) I put in the search term "refinery los angeles" into google earth. It came back with about 15 results, I hit play on the playlist and watched as it flew over each location. By the third result the image looked familiar. I went back and checked what was on screen and it is the *exact same image*.
Check out the Google Map to see exactly where the site is, it's just east of Los Angeles.
The site is a Cenco Oil Refinery (http://www.cencorefining.com/) which is currently for sale (maybe they will let Fox blow up part of it?) The refinery has not been operational since 1995.
