![]() | How to scam my old bank |
|
After moving to southern California I decided to close my old bank account. So I called them up and asked them what I needed to do to close the account and transfer the remaining money. They told me that I needed to come in to the branch. I told them that that wasn't possible since I now lived in Los Angeles, so the kind lady told me to call the branch that I opened the account at.
So I called that branch. The told me that I needed to fax them a letter requesting that the account be closed. They never asked for my personal info such as SS number or account number. So I put together the following letter. I kept it intentionally vague as a test to see if they would call me and get more info or if they would just send me the money. Note that I had recently moved, so the address they have on file is NOT the address I gave in the letter.
Now if you were the bank, and someone wanted to withdraw a lot of money to a new address and all they give is the account number and the right name, wouldn't you do a little checking to make sure it wasn't fraudulent?
A week later the check showed up with the entire contents of my bank account. If I were a thief I could close anyone's account and have the check sent to any drop address. |
