Miscelaneous: What's up with Canada?
Posted by kallahar on Dec.20.02 at 08:34 am PST.
kallahar writes "NOT LIKE THEM. It's how we've defined ourselves for generations. Quieter, less violent, more caring, not as arrogant. Different. Better. Everything Americans are, we aren't. It is the thing, along with the lint, that we have found at the very centre of ourselves -- the only chartable discovery in our seemingly endless search for a national identity." That's the ideal view, but is it really that way? Macleans.ca has the story

War: UN Iraq Resolution
Posted by kallahar on Nov.08.02 at 07:50 am PST.
kallahar writes Good news! The UN voted 15-0 for an arms inspection plan that will disarm Iraq. This is an excellent win for peace because (1) it gives Iraq one last chance, (2) it sets a specific time frame for compliance, and (3) it gives the UN the right to decide to attack if Iraq doesn't comply.

Crime: Is California Safe?
Posted by kallahar on Nov.03.02 at 09:36 am PST.
kallahar writes I just saw Bowling for Columbine. The primary question put forth is "Why is America more violent than other countries?" No one seems to know, but one theory is that the media keeps people afraid, and that fear leads to violence. Another question was whether the news is merely reporting the problems, or if they're making everything bigger than it actually is. To answer the latter question, I did some research at Gun Deaths in Your State site and put together a spreadsheet comparing the percentage of gun deaths by state (in 1998). Suprisingly, California which is a leader in fear-mongering on TV about crime ranks 18th in gun-related homicides. #1 is DC, #2 is Louisianna. In gun-related suicides CA ranks #39 while Arkansas is at #1 and Nevada at #2. Check out the spreadsheet to find where your state ranks: 1998 Gun Deaths.xls

Oppression: Bush seeks UN support for 'US Does Whatever it Wants' plan
Posted by kallahar on Oct.03.02 at 08:43 am PDT.
kallahar writes "President" Bush asked the UN to fully support his "US Does Whatever it Wants" plan in which the US is the only country in the world that matters. "According to top Bush Administration officials, if the measure is passed by the U.N. —and possibly if it is not—the U.S. would immediately launch invasions of Iraq, North Korea, and Cuba; establish oil-drilling operations in Siberia; install nuclear-missile silos in Mongolia along the Chinese border; make English the official language of the planet; detain thousands of Middle Eastern nationals currently in the U.S. on temporary visas; begin each day with a moment of worldwide prayer; and prohibit Japan and Germany from manufacturing automobiles."

Miscelaneous: Abrupt Climate Change
Posted by kallahar on Sep.30.02 at 09:45 am PDT.
kallahar writes The next ice age could come about in as little as a decade, reports Dr. Robert B. Gagosian, President and Director of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. "These warm-to-cold transitions happen in about 3 to 10 years. The cold periods lasted for 500 to 1,000 years. Such oscillations in temperature and ocean circulation have occurred on a regular basis." "The 16th-century Flemish artist Bruegel couldn’t have painted his famous frozen landscapes today, because now canals in the Netherlands rarely freeze, as they regularly did back then. And likewise, the winter in Valley Forge might not have been so cold, and Washington’s crossing of the ice-bound Delaware River wouldn’t have been so dramatic, if he had done it a century later—because our climate conditions have shifted since then, and today, the Delaware River rarely freezes."

Oppression: It's official: Bush is a dolt
Posted by kallahar on Sep.20.02 at 09:22 am PDT.
kallahar writes "There is an old saying in Tennessee. I know it's in Texas. They say, 'Fool me once, shame on ...(8 second pause)... you.' You can fool me, but you can't get fooled again."

Who uttered these words of pure wisdom? None other than our bumbling idiot of a president, George Bush Jr.

Money: Publicity and Violence
Posted by kallahar on Sep.17.02 at 03:49 pm PDT.
kallahar writes Salon has a good article up about how the "news" shows out there (Donahue, in this case) will slam people in an effort to get ratings. A good read, but hard to summarize. One quote is: "Despite all of the publicity about school shootings, the rate of juvenile violent crime in the United States is currently at a 30-year low."

Miscelaneous: Top 10 Idiots
Posted by kallahar on Sep.13.02 at 10:08 am PDT.
kallahar writes Funny list on the Top 10 Conservative Idiots in America. #1: "It turns out that our good friends Enron, WorldCom, and many other corporate evildoers are going to be having a good laugh at your expense soon. Why? Because if crooked corporations receive large fines for their disgraceful behavior, they will simply write it off on next year's tax return. That's right. The companies start to sink, Bush gives them your money in the form of a "stimulus package." It is revealed that they were committing fraud and they go bankrupt, you get laid off. They get hit up with a hefty fine, you pay for it. Welcome to Bush's "responsibility era" in action, folks - Bush's cronies rip off the country, and you're responsible."
