Religion: How Useful are the 10 Commandments?
Posted by kallahar on Apr.05.02 at 11:44 am PST.

kallahar writes Some lawmakers have been pushing to get the 10 commandments posted in schools to try to prevent Columbine-style problems. I'll put aside the obvious contradiction with the highest law-of-the-land, and question what the 10 commandments really say that could be of help.

  • 1-4: Don't worship anyone else.

  • 5: Honor your Father and Mother, well that's a good one, but only if you have good parents.

  • 7 & 10: No adultry or coveting other people's stuff.

That leaves 6, 8, and 9 which are all common sense: No killing, no stealing, and no lying.

Think about it, if a kid doesn't know 6, 8, and 9, what makes people think that posting all 10 on the wall would make a difference?
